PostSubject: Starbound   Fri 12 Apr 2013, 10:32 pm

Now now now, I'm just makin' all sorts of overarching game discussion threads lately aren't I? But Starbound is a 2D sandbox space explorer, akin to Terraria, except a fantasy world, it's space and has space exploration. It also has technology, and not magic! Though things that'd be impossible aren't necessarily off the table, and at the time of writing this initial post, it's in development. The only guy from Terraria that's working on Starbound though is Tiy, the spriter that came along near the end of it's initial run! Redigit doesn't have any hard feelings and in fact suppose the project though! But the main reason for such a topic's existence here today is the fact they've recently announced pre-orders, and I wanted to share the fact with you all, just like I shared Transistor and this can be upgraded into a discussion thread as necessary, of course!

http://playstarbound.com/ is the website, they themselves have a forum as well!
http://playstarbound.com/store/ here is the wondrous page where you can actually pay for Starbound for when it comes out - and instantly get the soundtrack, which when things are added to the soundtrack, you'll get those too! Quite a nice deal, I'd say, eh?

Me, personally, I'm planning on purchasing a 4 pack, and my eyes have sights on who I'm planning to give them to, and Fox is pretty much the only guy on this site that's on that list! [Sorry Mecha.] But if there's no direct download I'll probably give it away. It's ridiculously implied there's a direct download though. Why else 1 Copy of Starbound + Steam Key statement? That'd just be silly!

Oh, I see how it is.

Anyway, it looks really cool, and I'd probably really like it! But, uh, pre-orders for a digital download game seems odd.

They didn't want to do it at first, but they mentioned it to the community after it's been announced for a while and we all ravenously said "yes" and ate their toenails. And whilst it's functionally a preorder, it's also more based around crowdfunding, which as I said, they didn't want to do at first, but we all asked for it and they eventually gave it to us. 'Cause we're all excited for this lil' dittle. Very much so. It's massive Terraria* in SPAACE. How could we not be?

Huh, was wondering on what this silly li'l thing was coming along! I am now a happy dan the happy man. I'm kinda curious on how much it is, but the site isn't really loading for me. Boohoo. From what I remember, the physics in this game were magical.

The character creator is also available : http://community.playstarbound.com/chucklechargen/

But this game looks pretty sweet. I need to play Terraria again sometime so I'll certainly play this.

Oh yeah, Foxle. The races/species have some level of backstory to them on the website and I too will be playing as the Avian!

The Avian page won't let me link to it, so you'll just have to scroll down and read it there.
Apex, the ape/gorillas!
Florans, flowery type peeps.
And the Glitch, a.k.a what'd Moar play
Humans. That's what you are right now!

EDIT: Foxle, the game is 15USD, whether or not it'll automagically translate or you'd have to do through a PayPal type's translation, I dunno.
In pre-order, there's a few tiers though, 'kickstarter' style.
$20 USD gets you a fancy tier 1 forum badge [Can be bought in a 4 pack, like basic/15]
$45 USD gets you tier 2 and the availability to put your name in NPC name generation. [Can only be bought solo]
$75 gets you your name in the credits, Tier 3, NPC name generation.
$500 gets you the ability to design in a hat. Tier 4, credits, NPC Name.
$1000 gets you the ability to design a weapon, Tier 5, credits, NPC name, but as far I can tell you cannot design in a hat.
$2000 gets you a statue in-game! Tier 6, credits, NPC name, and far as I can tell no weapon design and no hat design. I'm kind of bothered by this tier, to be honest with you. 2000 is a lot of money on a video game and they only give you 1 key. Not even 2!

Every tier includes, from 15 to 2000, 1 copy of Starbound, the soundtrack, and a beta invite. 15$ and 20$ packages can be bought in a 4 pack.

I forgot about yet another thing!

Hylotl

(Aquatic) (Current name may be temporary.) (No Background racial data given yet)
That's the one below avians and in the middle of the bottom row in the character gen. It's mysteriiooous.

I might buy a 4-pack sometime, since everyone loves Terraria.

That being said, I still have 3 copies of Magicka I never gave out...

The Novakid - A new race!

$500,000 Stretch Goal

Now I can't be the only one bothered by a stretch goal, can I? I mean, they originally didn't want to do a pre-order and when they finally did it, they decided to do it Kickstarter-style, and we were kind of taken by surprise at that choice, or at least I was, but it was understandable because the whole reason why they decided to go ahead and make a pre-order system was for getting more funding for Starbound before it was released so they could potentially work on it full-time if it got enough support. But a stretch goal seems kind of arrogant. I've never really liked it when people add in stretch goals after they've gone halfway into the Kickstarter and have 200% of the funding pledged, but this one that started out as "hey if you want to give us money for this project we could deliver it to you faster" has sort of implied "hey if you give us enough money we'll add in more content that we wouldn't with less money!"
Not to mention we haven't even seen a background lore on the Hylotl and they're talking about a new race... If they get paid enough money. I just don't like the connotations that such an action has.

Hiya, Ken! Have I ever told you how much I appreciate you making this forum, am incredibly greatful of my position as a moderator, love your RP posts when you make them, and that you're my favorite person on this forum? along with Mecha and all those other people, of course...

*clears throat* Nice 4-Pack you plan on getting there. :shot:

Let me take a wild guess: Firo, Firo, Firo, and Ken?

Or is it more like Firo, Ken, Mecha, and Lightning?

Or Firo, Ken, Contest-that-can't-apply-to-Ray, Contest-that-only-applies-to-Firo? etc.

Firo, you realise that you're not the only one that knows about that, right?
Also, seriously, let's not have another topic going offtopic. It's honestly kinda silly.
I've never really been a fan of stretch goals, I know why they exist, but eh, I am pretty sure that you don't need that much money for a new class, right? Maybe? I had the same feelings on Shovel Knight, but that wasn't really as much and it was for better content than just a class!

You forgot, Ray.

As for the stretch goal, eh, I can see how it seems arrogant, but if it ends up helping the game's development, then I suppose it's all good in the end.

It's just out of the blue after the initial rush was successful, don't get me wrong, the Novakid looks pretty awesome, but they don't get $50,000 they don't add it in, makin' people scramblin' to advertise it so that they get put in. And they'll probably add another stretch goal that's mysterious after they get the Novakid stretch goal done.

Repeated unknown stretch goals are for charities, in my eyes. If you want to see a stretch goal from crowdfunding done right, see Skullgirls' Indiegogo, which whilst I WASN'T INFORMED WAS A THING, far as I could tell after it was finished the Stretch goals were all revealed fairly quickly This, if you missed it.

They can also easily wait to release it until they get 50,000 to make the Novakid or make the Novakid and wait so they don't feel like jerks, but something tells me that's not on Chucklefish's mind.
Sorry Chucklefish, Starbound's crowdfunding is not a charity. It's closest to a pre-order, or an investment. And far as I'm concerned, a Stretch goal is a misstep.

EDIT: Half of my points are misguised.
http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/novakid-new-starbound-race.17267/page-5#post-716779 [There's also a fan lore that came first up on the first page of this thread, if you wanna read it. Chucklefish may change it if they seek fit, though.]

Well, the way he explains the reason for the extra money, it makes sense. Still, I can see why people might find it to be a bit cheap.

That being said, I would totally choose Novakid.

I'm not going to lie: I'm kinda tempted to save up for that $45 copy just so I can name an alien NPC something interesting like "Ke'Zick-Forshi" or a human NPC something passively-futuristic like "Tace Marrak"

[Points for getting the second name's reference. Super-omega-bonus-instawin points for recalling when and why I made up that first name]

Well, Ray, sorry to disappoint but the NPC name thing? Not specified. NPCs are generated, and your name would just be added into a pile of names that generate as well. Potentially even with someone else's name, such as Ray Gearald the Novakid Merchant, and it may not be the only Ray Gearald that ever gets generated, as Ray Gearald the Hylotl Fisherman may also get generated.

...*imagines someone has already submitted "Dick Svukyrson"*

...Oh God...why, America? Why must your people be so stupid?!

...Oh well. So much for my desire to indirectly get a cameo, even if it's a one-in-20,000 chance. Hopefully the devs look at any submission verrrrry closely...like, "say the name five times fast/three times slowly, analyze each letter, spell it backwards", etc. Otherwise, I will lose faith in humanity tenfold.
